Cops Detectives and Private Eyes of the 70s by dusty-abell Cops Detectives and Private Eyes of the 70s by dusty-abell
Here's my tribute to all the great movies and television series of the 1970's I grew up watching as a kid. This has been a piece i've wanted to do for years and am happy to have finally finished it. How many of these do you remember or have you caught any of them in the intervening years on YouTube, Netflix, Hulu etc. A lot of the TV shows are a product of their time and are still wonderfully entertaining because of it. I can not recommend Columbo enough, it was really the impetus to finally do this piece! The motion pictures represented in this montage are all classics..... Jaws and The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 being two of my absolute favorites of all time.

Here's a link to a character call-out key to identify all the people in the picture- dusty-abell.deviantart.com/art…

The layout was inspired by an awesome book cover to the second Tom Strong collection by Chris Sprouse. No paper or pencils were harmed in the completion of this piece. Enjoy....................

Really fun, and very well done. Jim Rockford is my favorite among favorites, and I love that you included Hal Linden's Barney Miller, even if that series was ostensibly a comedy.

Not that I don't like the movie characters you've also included, but to me it makes it a little problematic (and I'm only nitpicking now). I suppose I can see your not including Jack Nicholson as J.J. Gittes in "Chinatown" if only because while the movie was released in 1974 the 1930s setting put him at odds, period wise, with the otherwise contemporary characters. But "Chinatown" is the greatest thing the genre had to offer in that decade, and its exclusion was the first thing that screamed out at me.

Other great movie character candidates would have included Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe in Altman's "The Long Goodbye" and Gene Hackman as Harry Moseby in Arthur Penn's "Night Moves", both of which are widely considered to be among the best crime/private investigator movies of that era. Donald Sutherland as the title character in "Klute" could be apt, though Jane Fonda's Oscar-winning turn as cal girl Bree Daniels really overshadows the title character. While slightly more obscure, Anthony Quinn's Captain Mattelli and Yaphet Kotto's Lt. Pope from "Across 110th Street" would have been a cool pull. Adaptations of Joseph Wambaugh's books was happening on the big and small screen, and George C. Scott's Kilvinskiin "The New Centurions" could have been a nod to that. Paul Newman first played Lew Harper in the 1960s, but I happen to really like 1975's "The Drowning Pool", as well. Art Carney as Ira Wells and Lily Tomlin as Margo Sterling in "The Late Show" is another little gem.

The TV stuff you included is all great and quite thorough. The only two I would quibble at all about are "The Mod Squad", which though it aired more episodes in the 1970s than the 1960s (84 vs. 40), it is surely the late 1960s milieu and notoriety that it is best remembered for, and "Hart to Hart", which though it did air its first eleven episodes (out of 110 total) in the fall of 1979 is most definitely a 1980s show in terms of style and impact. The only big 1970s TV show I'd say you missed representing is "The Rookies", which aired from 1972-1976. Joseph Wambaugh's "Police Story" (1973-1978) was a big show, but it had rotating characters and would be very difficult to represent with one or two actors. David Janssen's "Harry-O" ran for a couple of seasons, but he is SO forever linked to "The Fugitive" I can see skipping it.

But these are just thoughts, take them or leave them. Again, I really like the piece a lot. Thanks for sharing it!

Wow, i'm so happy this piece elicited such a great reply................i put so much effort into who i chose its really gratifying that someone else took the time to throw out their suggestions and observations. I really went with the shows that I remember and watched, and mostly the ones I think are classics, particularly the feature film ones i chose. You nailed the reason Jake Gettes didnt make it, and yes, the BEST crime movie of the 70's imho...........I enjoyed The Long Goodbye, but man, I honestly just don't get Elliot Gould, his acting style is so offputting to  me, and its crazy, in spite of my dislike for his acting, he's in one of my absolute favorite suspense films of the 70's, The Silent Partner. I just watched Night Moves a couple weeks ago for the first time on TCM and i'm not really sure how much I liked it, I think i need to see it again, it was crazy unpredictable though, definitely not what you expected. I need to watch Across 110th Street..I want to see that one, just no attachment to it yet having never seen it. The Rookies was on my radar, but again, never saw it growing up, so i didnt feel as compelled to make room for them. You have some great recommendations, movies I never even thought about. The longer my list got the more I started to become hesitant to keep looking for more...........Well, thanks again for taking a moment to comment so thoroughly, i very much enjoyed reading it. Take care.

You are amazing as always, but can you imagine a 12 issue series using all these characters?  Let's get Perez and Wolfman on it!!

Only Kojak can boast a version of the theme song sung by Sammy Davis Jr.

FYI The song "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow" was sung by Sammy for "Baretta" not Kojak.

Aha! Not so fast, Cowabunga! The Kojak theme_has_ lyrics never used in the series but a single was released sung by Sammy.
Here it is for your listening pleasure:

I shudder to think how many other TV show instrumental themes also had lyrics. I'm told "Bonanza" has particularly bad lyrica and it was used once!)

LOVE Pelham............I'm assuming you've seen Matthau in Don Siegels movie Charley Varrick, if you haven't give it a watch, another great early 70's crime drama with Walter playing really against type!

Yup! Seen it. I liked it, but it doesn't hold a candle to Pelham. I stumbled across Pelham one night back in the late 80's and was riveted by Matthau. He plays everything so natural in his films. I smile every time I catch one of his movies. 70's films just resonate. Can't explain it :)

Heh, I was thinking of doing something similar with the cops of today.
Sort of a super team of today's detectives.  Horatio from CSI Miami, Goren from Criminal Intent, Grissom from CSI, Bones from Bones, the guy from Lie to Me, Brenda Lee Johnson from Closer, Gibbs from NCIS, maybe the Mentalist, Monk, and Shawn from Psych, etc.  No criminal would ever get away.
