March 2013 Retro Marvel Calender............. by dusty-abell March 2013 Retro Marvel Calender............. by dusty-abell
MARCH 2013, Retro style.......Ok, the hardest part is finding the photographs............. the second hardest part was getting the color reference on all these obscure as hell bad guys that I needed to color for the big pin-up......it's originally a black and white page from the 1977 Mighty Marvel Superheroes Fun Book #2, artist UNKNOWN, if anybody has a clue I'd love to find out! I always dug that mess of villains when I was little, I never thought I'd end up coloring the Space Turnip some day.... yeah, he's in there!

I LOVE the flow of this one, great art all around! Other artists include Chris Sprouse, Chris Samnee, Jaime Hernandez, Kerry Gammil, Guy Davis, John Byrne, Scott Williams, George Perez, Jason Pearson, Chris Bachalo, Ed Mc Guinness, Dave Johnson, John Romita Sr. and Andrew Robinson!

I want this type of calendar for DC comics instead of marvel. But this is really sweet! Cool and awesome! I really like the retro calendar. But this one is for 2013! Epicly awesome!

MAGNETO: "Hey! Who's hand is that?!"

The Shocker and Juggernaut have looks on their faces like the Scorpion and Klaw both cut a stinky one.

Yeah! The baddies up front are like the teachers. Galactus teaches Machine Shop, Dr. Doom teaches Drafting, The Red Skull teaches Home Economics... a GED program, of course.

There's something unsettling, yet hokey about that top villains image. Classic Marvel shtick... I can't take my eyes off it.

I would love to find out who the artist was-- the expression on Magneto's face is priceless.

I can't tell if the group shot is comprised of various individual drawings recomposited together or if it is a wholly original piece. I do know there is some really awkward drawing going on in it (that Dr. Octopus head/body ratio is unreal) but it just oozes 70's era production art to me, which I really dig and thought fit perfectly with what I was trying to capture here.

It is absolutely perfect. I immediately had to go to Youtube and check out some old Marvel cartoons. Stuff like this really takes me back...

  • Unlike Galactus, Ultimo looks different when he's not rendered a hundred foot giant. He still looked familar, but I thought he was one of those Mekkan robot aliens or something.

  • Anyone curious enough to look these guys up, google "marvunapp" and "razorblade", otherwise you'll get entries on a couple maniac Jack the Ripper types Marvel's done over the years.

"... but schtupid" --LAUGH-IN I think I've seen all of these characters at one time or another, but I just can itentify them byname necessrilly. Frxmple guy covered in Xmas tree tinsel next to the Shocker... I think he was a Vietnamese super-villain being tracked by the Titanic Trio in an AVENGERS issue, but can't recall his name for the life of me.

Nice retro find. I used to work that book for HOURS as a kid. I also loved that they had puzzles for identifying artists. THAT was a first.
